A Koi Surprise

Aside fro watching TV series, my other past time is feeding our koi fish in our garden pond. Our garden is situated under an oak tree. We had put a net under the tree to catch the falling leaves. I also asked my dad to put a hammock under the tree so that during in my free time in the afternoon, I could stay there and sleep. Since our garden pond is relatively new, about eight months, we only have four adult koi fish in it. We are expecting that they would just reproduce on their own.

One afternoon, as I was feeding the koi fish, I noticed little creatures around it. At first, I thought they were tadpoles. But as they got closer to me, they were baby koi fish swimming around the Asagi koi. I instantly ran off to our kitchen and called my mom and dad. They too were surprised when they saw them. Just to make sure that we wil be doing the right thing for our new pets, we called in a professional koi breeder to check it out. The koi professional told us that everything is fine and that the baby koi have been there for about a month. They were jus too little for us to notice since they have been hiding under the plants.

We were so happy about the news. So the next morning, we decided to go to a koi fish supplies store to get more things that we needed. We cleaned up the pond to ensure that the water is good for their living condition.

After two months, the baby koi fish have grown a little, although we could not figure out their designs and colors yet, they sure can relieve our stress after a tiring day.

Now, as far as I could count we have about more than fifty koi fish. It is really a rewarding feeling seeing them swim around.

Suspensory Ligament Equine Lameness

In reviewing the literature on this common equine problem, it is evident that the causes are enormously varied and no “research studies “ or other publications have adequately addressed the issue. There isn’t even any agreement as to the nomenclature of suspensory ligament problems in horses. The common use of “ Degenerative Suspensory Ligament Desmitis “ (DSLD) is confusing.  The term “desmitis” is literally defined as “inflammation of a ligament”.  That is not helpful in understanding the cause and is confusing in that it implies a degenerative and an inflammatory process without separation.  A publication from the Veterinary School at the University of Georgia proclaims that the proper diagnostic term should be “Equine Systemic Proteoglycan Accumulation” ( ESPA) and other articles refer to a broader term of “Equine Suspensory Apparatus Dysfunction” ( ESAD ).   Undocumented statements have been made at various clinical veterinary conferences that the problem is primarily confined to Peruvian Paso and Paso Fino Horses. There is no evidence to support such a claim and suspensory problems have plagued all breeds including other breeds of gaited horse breeds. A letter published by one of the premier equine clinics in the world and signed by all five of the veterinary clinicians states that of their first one thousand cases of so called DSLD, only seven were Peruvian Paso Horses.  Inaccurate, undocumented, and anecdotal information has permeated the thoughts of many equine practitioners to the extent that any sort of suspensory ligament abnormality is automatically labeled DSLD.  The implication of such a diagnosis is that of an incurable systemic disease resulting from a hereditary defect in the metabolism of proteoglycans in connective tissue throughout many organs. Abnormal and systemic proteoglycan accumulation in various tissues is due to a deficiency of one or more of at least eleven enzymes ( lysozymes) and is a proven cause of disease syndromes in humans and other mammals. The problem in understanding and diagnosing suspensory lameness lies in making the distinction between a relatively rare systemic hereditable metabolic disease and the more common occurrence of suspensory ligament damage due to trauma or improper conformation.  The distinction is of vital importance for  prognosis and therapy.

Koi: The Real Thing

I am simple girl, living a simple life, with my parents. We are a typical middle class family; we only spend and buy things that are essential for our daily needs. I can say that, I was raised and taught well by my parents. So, when I was younger, I had a firm belief that none of all the material things can make a person truly happy, except family, friends and God. Well, it’s true. But my belief has changed when my best friend, gave me a koi fish picture with her holding the beautiful koi.

Honestly, I was never a fan of a koi fish, or any fish for that matter. But during that moment, I felt a certain flush in my body. So, I decided to check on the web to see where the koi centers are located so I could personally check them out in the morning.

The next morning, Christine and I took a bus and went to the koi center. There we saw a lot of beautiful koi varieties with different colors and patterns. Because of the happiness that I felt at that time, I said to myself that I got to have this fish.

During dinner at home, I shared my experience in the koi center to my parents. I showed them the pictures we have taken. They seemed happy seeing me happy. So I tried asking them if we could get one. Before I could say the magic word, my dad told me that we don’t need it and we can’t afford it. There was nothing I could do but cry. I really felt bad.

I understood my father. I know that if we could only afford it, for sure they would certainly give my request. So, I never asked again.

When school began that year, I had to move to another state for my college, of course, tagging along with me are the pictures of the koi fish. I was sad, I never got used to being away from parents.

That same year during Christmas, I went home to celebrate with my parents. To my surprise, there was a big pond in our backyard with four koi fish in it and a big tag that says “To our daughter, Gabby, Merry Christmas”. I was so happy. I never thought that they will give me what I’ve always wanted.

My mother then told me that during the night that I asked them if we could have koi in our home and they said no, they felt my sadness and still I never complained. So, as a reward of being a good daughter, they gave me a wonderful gift.

Now, I don’t only have pictures of koi fish. I have my own real thing.

Chinchilla Cage Necessities

Chinchillas, oddly enough, are fairly common pets. They can bring a heap full of joy into a home. If you are considering a chinchilla, special attention must be paid to the type of home you will need to provide. A large chinchilla cage is very important, as these little guys love to run around. There are a number of choices, including a custom homemade cage with many levels, to a store bought metal one. Here are some important considerations that you need to be aware of when you decide to buy your chinchilla’s home.

The biggest consideration is the size of the cage. As mentioned before, large cages are a must. Chinchillas are finicky pets, and can actually die from stress caused by an inability to run around. Having multiple levels is also essential. Chinchillas tend to hang out on the top level, but they will move around quite a bit. Chew toys are a necessity because chins are rodents. Dental problems will occur if they do not have anything. These can be wooden ledges, store bought wooden sticks, lava ledges, or cardboard tubes. A water and food container is obviously a big part of keeping a healthy chin. Stay away from plastic bowls, as again, chinchillas are chewers and plastic is not good to digest. The best water container is one that mounts on the outside of the cage, with a metal tube that runs inside. These have a ball in the tube so the water doesn’t leak, but your pet can easily drink from it.

So, chinchilla cages need to be big with multiple levels. Chew toys are essential for proper tooth health. Plastic is bad for chinchillas, so stick to wood or metal containers. This includes the food bowl, as well as the house, toys, etc. Chinchillas take a little more effort than a cat, but they are great pets.

How To Get Rid of Fleas on Dogs

Fleas are an equally annoying reality to both the dog and its owner. The same can very well be said of the owner’s family in addition. Nonetheless, fleas are something that cannot be left untreated on your beloved pet, because they will not only make the dog miserable. It will also prove to be a very miserable occurrence within the home as well. Because fleas can infest both carpets and furniture as they increase in number. Therefore, this makes it even more important to decrease dog fleas as much as possible. If your dog has already gotten fleas, there are many safe treatments to help treat the infestation. There are specific precautions to follow to help reduce the chance of fleas causing an outbreak.

How do dogs contract fleas? Well, one of the most clear of all ways is by being in contact with other infected dogs. Dogs can also get fleas from infested locations outdoors and from areas that are infested inside too. It is said that it is next to impossible to do away with the existence of fleas overall. Nonetheless, one can still lessen the chances by keeping their dog friends free from fleas. Practicing good preventive medicine is definitely a good beginning towards remaining flea-free.

Part of good preventive flea prevention is to pick areas that are outside of your home that are not visited by other dogs. You can take man’s best friend out for exercise and play to areas that special just to you and your pet. Another step to get rid of any visible fleas in your house is to use a product called a flea bomb. It is something very effective in doing away with fleas that are invading your residence.

Numerous products can help to protect your pet from acquiring fleas. However, many veterinarians look down on these products because the chemicals can be dangerous to dogs. Therefore, there are those veterinarians who do not recommend them and prefer to administer a professional form of treatment regularly instead. A veterinarian who gives these type of treatments can tell you how often they should be given to your furry friend. You can also help to guard him or her against fleas by using flea and tick shampoos on them as well. Flea and tick shampoos are a great way to protect dogs from fleas but also to get their fur and skin clean. The effects of these shampoos stay with them well after their bath is done. Your dog will not only be cleaner and happier. They will also be less bothered by the aggravating presence of fleas and other pests that can invade their world.

Stocking Your Koi Fish Pond

Having your own Koi Fish pond can be very rewarding. Here are a few things you should know about Koi. They are colorful mutations of the wild carp or cyprinus carpio. They are not goldfish. Koi are freshwater fish. The largest variety are located in Southeast Asia. As a matter of fact Southeast Asia is considered to be the origin of the Koi family.
There are at least 12 different types of Koi fish:

The Kohaku is fairly common. It is white with red markings.
The Kumonryu is white with deep black blotches.
The Asagi has a light blue head and a red underside.
The Bekko can have a white, yellow or orange background with black spots.
The Shusui has a white body with blue dorsal scales and a red underside.
The Tancho is identified by it’s white body and a bright orange spot on it’s head.
The Sanke have white bodies and patterns of red and black. There is no black on the head.
The Ogon comes in a variety of colours but they are one solid color only.
The Goshiki is marked in 5 colours.
The Hariwake is identified by a metallic body and patters of orange or yellow.
The Showa has a lot of black with heavy red and orange. They have only a little white.
The Matsuba comes in a variety of colours with a net pattern in their scales.

Koi are known to be destructive to the plant life in ponds. They have a tendency to root constantly. They root in search of insects and larvae to feed on. Planting your valuable plants in tubs will help a great deal.

If you are using city water in your pond and have a pH balance of 8.6+ then keeping goldfish & shubunkins instead may be necessary, unless you use PH buffer. These other fish species can also grow very large and they can be very colourful as well.

Use salt wisely! 0.1% is the recommended salt level. If properly cared for Koi can live up to 60 years!

Not overstocking your Koi fish pond is very important. Recommended stocking density is 5 inches of fish per 100 gallons of water in an unfiltered pond, 10 inches of fish per 100 gallons of water in a pump-fed pond and 20 inches of fish per 100 gallons of water in an elaborate filtered pond.

Other stocking recommendations are based on the pond surface area. Recommendations are as follows:

unfiltered – 5 inches of fish per 10 sq. ft.
pump-fed – 10 inches of fish per 10 sq. ft.
elaborate filtered – 20 inches of fish per 10 sq. ft.

Do you want to set up an aquarium?

I really enjoyed having fish tanks when I was a child. It is generally thought that watching fish in an aquarium is a stress reducer and has a calming effect. I think that is true as can be observed by the popularity of large places like the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

After visiting a large public aquarium like that, I am often tempted to build a huge wall aquarium at home. I have even fantasized about building an entire house around a huge central tank, going so far as to sketch floor plans. But, thankfully, reality sets in, and I scale back my ambitions. Read More…

One of the Many Animals Endangered

The Arakan Forest Turtle is a very rare animal native to the Arakan Hills of Burma. These weird  animals are endangered for a number of reasons. It was thought to be extinct back in 1908 but around 1994 they were noticed for sale at the food markets in Southeast Asia. These turtles among many other species are hunted for food and that is why they are in danger.

These freaky weird animals have very sharp claws that are like roofing tacks. They have thick shells to protect themselves and are about the size of a baseball glove when full grown. They feed on a diet made of equal parts fruits and vegetables and small animals such as worms and fish. They range from 7-10 pounds are are about a foot in length.

These turtles typically lie dormant most of the time unless foraging for food. Typically the rain is what motivates them to search for food to eat. This turtle takes being calm to a new level. It will lay under vegetation for hours at a time. It also swims in ponds and rivers. The only time it shows aggression is when hunting worms and insects.

There are many efforts being made to save this extremely rare turtle. The Atlanta Zoo is doing its best to keep the species going. They have several of them in captivity and they are breeding more. Despite their efforts these turtles are still being eaten and sold for profits in Asia. They burn their habitats and catch them when they flea from the fires. They are also lost to farming efforts and bamboo deforestation for paper production.

This turtle should be protected at all costs it is one of the many animals endangered in the world. With enough protection and rehabilitation efforts it is possible to keep the Arakan Forest Turtle from going extinct.
