The Day I Got The Ugliest Tattoo Ever

Okay, we’re all human and we all do stupid things at some point in our lives.  Some people get in trouble with the law.  Some start using drugs.  Some make bad relationship choices.  If you can think up something stupid, someone out there has done it.  It seems to be hard coded in our very DNA to make bad choices in life.

Let me tell you about one of my bad choices.  One day, when I was about 17, I was hanging out with my friends with nothing to do but let our minds come up with stupid things to do.  There were five of us who were best friends.  We did everything together.  On this particular day, we decided that we should do something to commemorate our friendship.  We decided to come up with a symbol that represented out little group of friends and have it tattooed on our arms.  Since we were only 17, we couldn’t just march on down to the local tattoo parlor and lay our money on the counter.

We decided that it wouldn’t be too hard to make a homemade tattoo gun and do it our self.  We got on the Internet and found plans for a very easy to make tattoo gun.  It was made out of some pieces of an erector set, a small motor from a toy car, a couple of wires,  a 9 volt battery, and a printer ink cartridge would supply the tattooing ink.  Our homemade tattoo gun went together in no time flat.

We were all hopped up on teenage stupidity and couldn’t wait to get started tattooing.  Me, being the adventurous one in the group volunteered to go first.  My friend, Ted was the best artist in the group so he was nominated to give the first tattoo.  First, he traced the design on my arm with a black sharpie pen.  Then, he dipped the needle from the homemade tattoo gun into the printer ink and connected the battery.  Our tattoo gun began to purr and he began to give me a tattoo.  It didn’t hurt as bad as I thought it would.  It was, however, very messy and bloody but that didn’t matter. We were committed.  When he finished the tattoo, he wiped the blood and ink away to reveal his handiwork.   Boy was I surprised when I saw the result.  It was horrible!  It easily had to be the ugliest tattoo any of us had ever seen.  He dipped the needle in the ink again and tried he best to make it look better.  No matter how hard he tried, the tattoo didn’t get any better.

Needless to say, none of my friends jumped in line to be next to get tattooed.  I ended up being the only one who got a homemade tattoo.  The next day I started researching tatoo removal options.  I didn’t have the money to have it removed and to this day, I still have that ugly tattoo.  I’m optimistic though. Last week, I ordered some tattoo remover cream online.  I can’t wait for it to get here so I can put this mistake behind me.

The Tricky Business of Choosing Frames

The frames used in your eyeglasses may have the same importance as to the type of the lenses used.  There are some important points to be considered when choosing the right frame for the face. Read More…

Learning How To Draw

If you are one of those people who have always wanted to be an artist but were not born with an innate talent for it, then this article is directed at you.

Becoming a great artist is like accomplishing anything else. You must be fiercely determined and have the correct mindset to reach your goals. It is not necessary to have special talents from birth. Absolutely anyone is capable of learning how to draw, regardless of age or chosen occupation.

You have probably heard that to draw, you must observe with the eyes and then recreate what you have seen. This sounds much easier that it really is. Amateur artists are tempted to copy what they see but do not really learn anything while they are doing so. Read More…

Calligraphy as Graffiti

Calligraphy and graffiti might not seem like the most related art forms; possibly distant cousins, but not really in the same category.  The interesting thing about these two types of art though is that they are very related and this can be seen particularly well in graffiti blackbook art.

A graffiti blackbook is a place for graffiti artists to make sketches and other drawings for fun, to plan for an upcoming piece to go on a wall, or to let other artists sketch in them.  When you think about what the stylistic writing seen in a graffiti blackbook, it is actually very similar to what a calligraphist would sketch in a notebook – in many cases they are both working to create very stylistically beautiful text.  Although they are probably being created for different audiences, the idea of creating beautiful words, or maybe even helping to add additional feeling to the words through imagery, is still basically the same.

In addition to stylized text (like some of the things that can be seen at GraffitiBlackbook.net), graffiti can be found all over the world and has been around for a very long time.  It has evolved into many different forms, with one of the newer ones being stencil graffiti art like what is being created by Banksy.  Blek le Rat might be considered the godfather of stencil graffiti, but Banksy has managed to bring the art full force into the mainstream.  He is still producing all the time, including things that can be seen in art shows instead of the walls of buildings around cities.  In addition, he actually created a pet shop in New York City in 2009 that was full of crazy animated animals and other interesting imagery.

So they might not seem to be in the same category, but in reality calligraphy and graffiti actually have some interesting points of overlap.  It would be very interesting to do a side by side comparison of the two for some confirmation.
