No matter what you do, you are selling something. If you are like me, a Seattle DUI attorney, you are selling your services. You are trying to convince someone that you are the right DUI attorney for them. If you are in shoes, you’re selling a commodity. If you are a nurse, you’re selling a good experience in the hospital. We’re all selling something.
And today I’m going to give you three tips to be better at it.
1. You Have to Believe.
You have to believe in what you are selling. If you don’t it will be clear to the prospective client or customer, and that isn’t good. The best way to create a strong belief in your services or your product is to get to know a lot about them. If you are an expert at what you are selling, you know the true benefits of what the buyer is looking for, and you know the product or service you have will help.
For example, as a Seattle DUI lawyer, I know many other lawyers out there that aren’t that good. They don’t really know what they are doing or they are just too lazy to put together good case. I don’t really ever discuss that with a potential client (I never bad mouth other people), but when I’m telling them that I’m one of the best DUI lawyers in town they can tell that I mean it.
2. You Have to Have a Plan.
When someone walks into your store or comes in for an appointment, you can’t just wing it and hope to maximize your effectiveness as a salesperson. You have to have a plan that will carry you from the opening meeting with the potential client to when you walk them out the door. This takes a little bit of time and reflection, so take it. Think about what the potential client wants, and then come up with a plan to give it to them.
For me, when someone’s facing a DUI charge I know they are scared and they usually want someone to answer a lot of questions for them. They also usually want someone to hear their side of the story. When I meet with someone, I allow plenty of time for this to take place. Then I walk them through the process, tell them about who I am and what I can do for them, and then we talk about fees. It’s very choreographed.
3. Practice Makes Perfect.
You don’t want the first time you give your sales presentation to be when the client comes in, just like you don’t want the first time you shoot a basket to be in front of a crowd with a team playing defense against you. So practice what you are doing. Record what you are doing. And then tweak it so you get better. Then practice it again.
Just like I wouldn’t do an opening or closing argument in front a jury for the first time, I don’t do my sales pitches in front of potential clients for the first time. I’m always tweaking, trying to make it better. Because that’s what gets people to sign up. And when people sign up, then you can deliver what you’ve promised.
