Buying Outdoor Equipment: Considerations

So you are looking for some type of outdoor equipment, and you don’t know where to buy it, or rather, should you buy it in person, or would it be easier to buy online.  Many people ask the same question, because ordering online has become such a standard exercise.

The facts are though, that there are number of issues you need to settle in your mind before you make a significant purchase of bulky equipment online, as it is very easy for things to get complicated very quickly.  The issues are mostly that it often costs a lot for it to be sent, and this can cause complications if you want to return it for any reason.

Returns:
Lets say that you buy a tent.  You see it online, fall in love with it, and buy it on the spot.  It arrives on time, but you discover that your 3 man tent is closer to a 1 and a half man tent.  This won’t do, as you will definitely need more space, so you decide to return it.  Problem is that your retailer doesn’t cover it (Outdoor Megastore will only cover faulty goods), so you’re going to have to pay for it yourself.  This obviously, is far from ideal, and may deter some people from buying large, expensive items online before seeing them set up.

Faulty Goods:
Many online outdoor warehouses will only cover the cost of returning a faulty good up to a certain point (Outdoor Megastore will pay only the first 10 pounds).  This leaves most people with a bitter taste in their mouth, as not only is it a hassle, but you often end up paying significantly more for an issue which wasn’t your fault, and you had nothing to do with.

As you can see, for many people, although many online outdoor retailers are extremely responsive, some choose to buy outdoor goods in a shop.

Anyone who has camped before knows how much space is a commodity, particularly when it comes to your camping tent.  If you’ve never been camping before you will realize it very soon, so when you go to choose between different affordable tents, its size should be one of the most important things you consider.
The size of your tent has a lot of impact on your camping experience.  Its weight can weigh you down while hiking and the dimensions can limit how much you can fit inside and how comfortably you sleep.  The first thing you need to know is that the companies that manufacture tents generally give a number that corresponds with the amount of people they think should fit inside the tent.  Is that always accurate?  Usually it isn’t.  You may indeed be able to fit 3 people in a 3 person tent but you might not be able to move around at all and all of the things you brought with you might be sitting outside due to lack of space.  In general, you will want to get a size a little bigger than the amount of people you think you might need to sleep inside.
Next, really think about what you are going to bring with you.  Do you want to bring something to sleep on, lots of clothes or other things.  If that is the case you will need a lot more space than the tent says it can fit.
Another question you need to ask yourself is how you are actually going to get to the campsite.  Is it car accessible or are you going to have to backpack into it?  This will affect what size you need in a different aspect than just how many people can sleep in it.  You will now need to consider how much it will weigh.  When you are staying at a site that is easily accessible it probably won’t matter much.  But you aren’t going to want to be lugging in a 40 pound tent if you have to hike 10 miles to your campsite.  It just isn’t very reasonable.  In this case, you may need to go with a smaller tent than you might like ,but you most likely will already be traveling with less stuff so you won’t need as much room.  When you hike into a campsite see if it is an option to shift the weight around by splitting up the tent into different parts so you can put them in different people’s bags.  This allows the weight to be spread out to different people without one person getting left carrying all of the weight.  Many tents will make this easier by giving you separate bags for different parts of the tent.  Whatever you do just make sure you don’t lose any of the pieces or the instructions to set it up!

Basic Camping Etiquette

Most people think of camping as a way to get away from people and while that might be true to a certain degree, you can’t get away from everyone completely. You will still have to deal with your camping neighbours and as such, you need to be on your best behaviour. But rather than looking at it as a nuisance, you should appreciate that camping brings people together in the spirit of appreciating nature. So having consideration for others adds to everyone’s overall experience while coinciding with treating the wilderness with respect. Read More…

Camping trips are often a great way to bond with your family and friends and get away from the busy world for a few days of relaxation. There are many activities you can participate in while out in the forest. For example, if you camp out next to a lake you could go swimming, or fishing. If you catch a fish you could cook it over the fire and have it for dinner. The list of recreational activities while in the wild is massive. Read More…

A camping trip takes special attention to detail if you are planning on being off the beaten road and unable to find a store within 15 minutes drive to pick up anything you missed.  If you need to buy a camping table, there are a lot of varieties to choose from.  A table for a backpacking camping trip will need to be small and light, whereas a car camping trip has a lot more options.
