Whether you’re in business and need to work while on the move or a student and need to a cheap solution, it’s portability that makes laptops what they are. However, portability is often misinterpreted as simply small in size, when realistically, it’s a number of different factors that determine how portable it is. These factors include size, weight, battery type and capacity, as well as hardware features, such as power states. With the progress of technology advancing as it is, it’s time to determine whether a laptop like the Aspire One netbook lives up to the task.
First to consider is the power within the machine. It’s clear from the specifications that this wasn’t designed for heavy lifting. The processor is a budget-range Intel Atom clocked in around 1.6GHz, a single core component capable only of simple tasks, not to mention there’s barely enough RAM inside to run Windows XP or 7, don’t even think about anything beyond word processing on Vista. The higher-range models support a large 250GB hard drive, which is suitable for most people. The wired and wireless adapters are compatible with most, if not all, systems.
Allowing for the subcompact style of this laptop, it has several features that may interest you. First of all, the monitor can be the tiny 8.9 in or the above-average 11.6 in, both of which are designed towards different uses. Also, every variety of this laptop comes with an integrated webcam and the advanced models support bluetooth.
As far as portability goes, this laptop barely makes it. While the smaller sizes provide a big advantage, the 3-cell battery isn’t going to last very long, perhaps a couple of hours average at best. The 6-cell is a better option and likely to last longer, but is still a mediocre, plain battery that will stretch to 4 hours if you don’t push it too hard. However, if you do put it under stress, expect it run out considerably quicker.
As a low-budget laptop, it is designed for those who require no more than simple tasks done on a portable machine and have access to power supplies. Simple tasks include instant messaging, word processing and perhaps watching videos, so if they sound like the majority of your tasks for the day, then this is the one for you.
