Don’t Choose Velvet Canopy Bed Curtains

I’ve always been a big fan of those old antique wooden canopy beds with the thickly carved and ornate bed posts. You know the ones, the bed of kings and queens. It’s actually quite difficult to find and get hold of one of these types of beds. There are a number of canopy bed manufacturers around these days but the majority are made in a modern style, which is to say they are quite minimalist with sharp straight lines. They’re nice but a very different proposition to the old style which tends to be more ornate and luxurious.

I have to say though that I don’t particularly like all the lavish thick curtains that go with these kinds of beds. Even if it’s a big heavy bed I don’t like heavy drapes. I went to a tea party of a dear friend recently and she has a beautiful antique canopy bed but I was very disappointed to see that she had, in my opinion, spoiled it by covering it in folds and folds of velvet. It was all so rich and heavy it made me feel almost claustrophobic. I think she would have been better off without any canopy covers at all.

Heavy drapes certainly served their purpose back in the day, preserving as much heat as possible in the bedroom would have been pretty essential in a drafty old castle with no central heating. In a modern house those drapes just don’t serve any real purpose, they just weigh heavily on the overall interior design and collect dust in a way that’s very unattractive.

If you look around at the modern canopy bedding available you will find that most of it is made out of light wispy materials and often in light bright colors which bring an airiness to the bedroom decor. Velvet curtains are a thing of the past and not really suitable, in my opinion, for a contemporary interior
