One of the best things about road bike cycling is the knowledge that first you are doing your bit for the environment, and second that you are saving a heck of a lot of money on having to put all that petrol or diesel in your car.  At the moment of writing, the massive oil spill which has been created by BP is destroying part of the coastline in the States, and it has really made me think about the impact that my car is having on the environment, not to mention some of the products that I use.

Perhaps we all need to think about it?  It doesn’t just have to be a UK company, it was probably a disaster just waiting to happen.

So what can I do to make a difference?  It’s only a small part, but if I can use less plastic products, for example, and not use my car so much, then perhaps I can contribute to saving the environment.  And perhaps save money too.

How much could I save?  Will it really make a difference?

I put on average about £200 a month into my car.  But many of those journeys I use the care for could be completed in just a little more time on a bike, and if I don’t go too fast then I won’t get too hot and sweaty either.

More than that, the replacement on parts for a bike is a lot cheaper than for a car!  However, they do still cost.  Which is why as I was putting my bike away this morning I started to consider whether or not instead of just coughing up for repairs when I wasn’t prepared for it, if I were start saving a certain amount each month to cope with bike bills.

How can I budget the ongoing costs?

I already have some home accounting software that will do the trick and help me to budget.  And by putting away just £15 a month then I can get the bike serviced every 6 months (a service in the UK costs about £50) as well as keeping an eye on consumerable items such as the chain on the bike and chain cleaner.

I have decided that I am going to use my bike much more than I do currently.  It will put money in my pocket and by budgeting I shouldn’t get caught out by any unexpected costs along the road.  And who knows?  I might even help the environment too.
