Aliens represent an interesting part of our culture.  We are constantly discovering new things about the universe around us – some amazing to everyone, some only to scientists, some rather boring – but for some reason aliens have always managed to grab our attention.  They show up in movies, television, books, poems, pictures; you name it and there is a good chance that aliens have shown up at some point or another.  It’s hard to say exactly why aliens have managed to create such a strong hold on society, but maybe it’s because they represent the unknown.  In the same way that stories have been created throughout the course of time to help satisfy our desire to answer things we don’t understand, aliens help give us an image to think of when we consider whether or not we are alone in the universe.

There have probably been tales of aliens coming to Earth for a very long time, but some of the most memorable ones told by the recent generation are the incident in Roswell, the sightings in Gulf Breeze Florida, and light show over Los Angeles.  The interesting thing about Roswell and the incident in Los Angeles is that they weren’t necessarily pegged as alien and UFO sightings until many years later.  There have been several theories revolving around both of these incidents, and a lot of the information about them on the web now tends to point towards an inexplicable event that has been blown slightly out of proportion by conspiracy theorists.  Gulf Breeze was actually proven to be a hoax when someone discovered a fake UFO shaped object in the house of the primary contact (who also wrote a book).  The pictures he had released to the press were very convincing and apparently he had experience using double exposures to create the illusion of images floating in a setting.

Although these previous encounters have proven to be hoaxes, it will be interesting to see where the idea of alien life moves to in the future.  Hopefully with the impressive advances that are taking place in science as we speak, it will only be a matter of time before we’re beyond the hoaxes (some of the main ones are discussed at Alien Sightings Chronicle) and into the possibilities of actual life out beyond our planet.
