Jack Russell Puppies are Full of Energy

Jack Russell puppies are the rambunctious little dog popularized on TV and motion pictures that are so bold, rough, and rowdy. Any new owner of a Jack Russell puppy who is expecting nice docile little dog is likely to be in for a surprise. This breed has an interesting beginning. It gets its name from Parson Jack Russell who was a rough and tumble, hard-drinking hunter from the 1850s.

Jack Russell puppies were bred from the wire-haired Fox Terrier. Jack Russell wanted a brave, spunky little dog that would follow a fox into its den but would not kill it. This dog was used to flush the fox out into the open where the foxhounds could pick up the chase. He was bred to have short legs, which enabled him to enter underground tunnels. Jack Russell’s brazen personality seemed to be manifested in his dogs. These terriers seem to be fearless.

With all their pent up energy these dogs need to have lots of constructive things to do. Jack Russell puppies need domineering and persistent owners who will work hard at socializing the puppy from the very beginning.

Considered to be a working dog this animal’s fearlessness and skill are considered more important than the way he looks. The Jack Russell Terrier Club does, however, offer guidelines for breeding. The dogs should be 10-15 inches high. Their coat can be wiry or smooth and their color is mostly white with accents of black, brown, or tan. Being a working dog they should have a physically fit appearance. The ears are angled slightly forward. The slender chest gives the impression of being in good shape. The hind legs are strong and the tail is docked to a length of about four inches.

As mentioned Jack Russell puppies were designed to pursue small animals in the wild. It comes naturally to them. Your Jack Russell is likely to give chase to any rabbit or other small animal it encounters. He is just being himself. These natural instincts can be challenging to any owner. An outdoor walk can turn into an adventure at any time. They love to chase about anything. Jack Russell’s will chase other small dogs.

Working dogs tend to have fewer health problems and tend to have good temperaments. When aggressive breeders try to increase the number of dogs produced more health problems are seen, however.  Some of the more common health problems are lens luxation, ataxia, and glaucoma.  These problems are still fairly infrequent in Jack Russell puppies.  This could all change as high volume breeders start to offer Jack Russell puppies for sale.
