The Many Benefits of Green Tea

Evidence suggests that human beings have been drinking tea of some sorts for over 5,000 years.  While India and China were the first to cultivate tea, tea is now the second most commonly drank beverage in the world.  (Behind water)  There are three main types of tea – green, oolong and black.  The primary differences come from how they are processed.

Green Tea is made of unfermented tea leaves.  Of all teas, green tea has the highest concentration of antioxidants.  These antioxidants, called polyphenols, are believed to fight free radicals in the body.  This is important because the oxidative cellular damage caused by free radicals tampers with your DNA and can alter cells.  This is believed to lead to aging, cancer and heart disease.  Free radicals do occur naturally in the body, but we are also exposed to them through other means.  Air pollution, smoke, radiation and ultraviolet rays are all external sources that lead to an increase in free radicals in your body.

Green tea has long been used for medicinal purposes.  A critical component in both Indian and Chinese traditional medicine, green tea has been used as an astringent for wounds, to improve heart health, to promoted digestions and improve mental function.  It has also been used to regulate body temperature, even out blood sugar levels and as a diuretic.

Recently, the idea of green tea weight loss has been given a lot of attention.  There is scientific evidence that green tea does improve the metabolism, and can aid in speeding the rate of weight loss.  It is important to note that while some websites would have you to believe otherwise, green tea alone is not enough to help with weight loss.  Losing weight fast takes work! You must also follow a healthy diet and exercise.  Green tea can support your weight loss efforts, but you still have to work!
